Totango company released an interesting study, where they analyzed and discovered how credit card requirements affect sign up process.

They asked for a credit card upfront, but later they removed this requirement. As a result their sign ups increased by 500%, but what’s more important – they started receiving 50% more paid users!

We know, sometimes credit card is a good “barrier” to filter users with serious intentions (in case you have a team of expensive in-house sales guys), but sometimes you just need to give an opportunity to test your product easily.
